Changes to BBC HD channels on satellite on 6th June

From the BBC Internet Blog:-

"Changes to BBC HD channels on satellite on 6th June"

We will shortly be making a change to the satellite transponder that carries BBC One HD & BBC HD. The signal on this transponder is currently broadcast using a modulation scheme called "DVB-S". On 6 June we will be upgrading to a newer "DVB-S2" scheme. This is a more efficient way of operating the transponder and it creates more capacity from the same amount of spectrum. More spectral bang for our buck, if you like.

The change will mean different things to different people:

If you watch TV using Freeview or Virgin Media or can't currently view HD channels you will not be affected.

If you have Sky, you will not notice the change and won't have to do anything on or after 6 June.

If you have Freesat you may need to put your HD box or TV into standby for 30 seconds and then restart to continue to receive the two BBC HD channels. If the channels are still unavailable then carry out a 'freesat channel retune' or a 'first time installation'. Full instructions can be found in the manual for your box or TV. Further help with retuning can be found at
www.freesat.co.uk or by calling their customer support team on 08450 990 990." Read More...

MUSIC IN FELIXSTOWE – JUNE NEWSLETTER

We are busy rehearsing for an exciting concert this Sunday, June 5th – 3.00pm at St Andrew’s Church.
It is a great pleasure to be working with Anna Noakes, whose flute playing includes concertos with the London orchestras, film work and her own tango band! We have a change of pianist and welcome back John Stafford who is known to most of you as a brilliant musician.

Our programme includes a delightful trio by Weber, music by French composers, Faure, Poulenc and Gaubert, and a brilliant trio by Martinu, whose upbringing in a bell tower is resonant throughout the work.

Music in Felixstowe

We have several concerts coming up including a mini tour of the memorable 1940’s wartime show which we put on last summer. Several people have said they would like to see it again, so I am including the details. We will be performing it at Peasenhall Village Hall on Saturday 30th April at 7.30 - booking through Tricia Maguire on 01728 660022. The other performance is at St Mary’s Church Harkstead (on the Holbrook peninsular) booking through Jane Goyder on 01473 328314.

The next concert in our series is on May 8th at 3.00pm when Mark Messenger, head of strings at the Royal College of Music, will be the leader in a programme which includes the Schubert Cello Quintet and Haydn’s “Lark Quartet”.
This concert will be at St Peter and St Paul’s church (Old Felixstowe).
4 May: STOP PRESS! Mark Messenger is unable to play in the Schubert quintet on Sunday, but I'm delighted to say that Roland Roberts is stepping into his shoes and it will, no doubt, be brilliant.

The next Wednesday lunchtime concert will be on May 18th at 1.00pm at St Andrew’s Church. John Stafford and Christine Whiffen will present a piano duet recital which will include the famous Schubert Fantasy and Fauré’s Dolly Suite.

I am delighted to report that I have recently received the Mayor’s award for services to Felixstowe. As I said recently at the Brahms Requiem, it is due to the support of all the musicians and audiences that the series has been so successful, so “thank you” to everyone.

Hope you’re enjoying this wonderful Spring

3VWG Spring Newsletter

3 Village Woodlands Group Newsletter Spring 2011

Now that winter seems to be at last relaxing its iron grip we are relaunching our activities for the coming year.

We plan to concentrate our energies this year on making progress in Kirton Churchyard woodland margins. After some bureaucratic hurdles the Church authorities have approved the removal of self seeded sycamores from the southern boundary. This will enable us to restore the southern hedgerow while the sycamores are yielding valuable material for path edging and other projects.

On the Buses

ON THE BUSES

I'm writing this on March 8th, a month before the new timetables come into use on April 4th, so there still might be changes. However, this is how I see things at this time. As usual, the timetables are not easy to follow, but I can't think of an easier way of doing them. We have three operators: Beestons, Carters Coaches and Ipswich Buses (for schools).

More spoof phone calls

Having received two suspicious phone calls in two days, in spite of having Telephone Preference Service, I thought you ought to be aware.

1.
Caller: Is that Mr R-H?
Me: Who is calling, please?
Caller: Is that Mr R-H>?
Me: Who is calling, please?
Caller: I can’t tell you because of the Data Protection Act.
Me: Don’t be ****** ridiculous!

2.
Caller: Is that Mr R-H?
Me: Who is calling, please?
Caller: This is the Industrial Works Unit [who they? no explanation given]. Am I right in thinking someone in your household used to be employed?
Me: None of your business. Goodbye.

If a caller wants to know who you are, they should identify themselves first. If you are still suspicious, terminate the call. They have your name and phone number so probably have your address. If they are genuine they will write to you. But beware of spoof mail as well!
